Experience Mickelsörarna
Daily boat trips August 1-10, 2025 to Mickelsörarna with the boat Filifjonkan!
Join the charter boat Filifjonkan from Stråkaviken to Mickelsörarna – a true gem in the Kvarken archipelago with over 300 islands, reefs, and skerries. The largest islands are Källskär and Villskär. The archipelago is known for its rocky and deep shores.
The Mickelsörarna Nature Station on the island of Kummelskär is a former coast guard station that was decommissioned in 1993. Solrutten is responsible for operations at the Mickelsörarna Nature Station. On Kummelskär, there is also a nature trail about a kilometer long, which tells the story of the island's nature and shows the old hut foundations.
Mickelsörarna has had permanent residents since 1830. At its peak, 35 people lived on Vildskär, mainly on "Gårdarna," which is the largest group of farms. The last resident, Ida Lundberg, lived at Gårdarna year-round until the late 1980s, and after that only during the summer. People have visited the island group long before that and left many traces, such as hut foundations, "jungfrudanser" (ring-shaped stone formations), stone ovens, and more. On Kummelskär, there are about ten remains of fishing settlements. These are believed to date back to the 1500s and were built by farmers from Vörå who came here to fish.
The natural environment of Mickelsörarna is still shaped by the intense logging that accelerated in the 1970s, when there were discussions about making Mickelsörarna a national park. The national park was never realized, but in 1989 the State Council made a principle decision to protect the island group. Kvarken's archipelago was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2006, as the first – and so far only – natural heritage site in Finland.
