For each theme area, there are references from the curriculum of each subject where the theme can be reflected. 

Here are references to the theme area Understanding the role of humans in the ecosystem in the subject BI.
Then there are references to the theme area Climate change and the environment in the subjects BI and GE.

THEME: UNDERSTANDING HUMAN'S ROLE IN THE ECOSYSTEM

Understanding the human role in ecosystems is part of the central content I6 in biology for grade 9:

"They gain insight into the possibilities of bioeconomy and ecosystem services from a sustainability perspective."

  • M6 guide the student to assess changes in nature and human impact on the environment, as well as understand the importance of ecosystem services
  • M11 encourage the student to apply knowledge and skills in biology in their own life, as well as in public debates and decision-making
  • M13 guide the student to make ethically motivated choices
  • M14 inspire the student to influence and build a sustainable future

K2: "Students should learn to interpret cultural messages in their environment, get to know and appreciate their living environment and its cultural heritage, and identify values associated with it."

K3: "During primary education, students should practice making sustainable choices and adopt a sustainable lifestyle."

K4: "Through teaching, students' cultural, ethical, and ecological literacy should be strengthened."

K5: "Students should learn to seek and produce information and use information sources in a versatile way as a basis for investigative and creative work. At the same time, they should practice being critical of sources and learn to assess their own and others' ways of working and producing information, as well as how different search services and databases function and produce information."

THEME: CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Climate change and the environment are part of the core content I6 in biology for 9th grade:

  • "The content relates to the preservation of biodiversity, climate change, sustainable use of natural resources, and changes in the local environment. Students reflect on ecological, social, economic, and ethical principles for the sustainable use of natural resources, sustainable food production, and animal welfare."

 

The goals related to I6 in biology for 9th grade are:

The objectives related to I6 in geography for grade 9 are:

  • M4 encourage the student to reflect on the interaction between humans and nature and to understand the importance of sustainable use of natural resources
  • M9 teach the student to observe the environment and environmental changes, and engage the student to keep up with current events in their local area, in Finland, and around the world
  • M11 guide the student to care for nature, the built environment, and their diversity, and strengthen the student's ability to participate and influence

K4: "Through education, students' cultural, ethical, and ecological literacy should be strengthened."

K7: "During basic education, students should form an understanding of why studies and participation are important, what a sustainable lifestyle means, and how the knowledge acquired in school can be used to build a sustainable future."
