Criteria for Preschool and School Transportation
According to the Basic Education Act 628/1998 § 32, a student's daily school commute, including waiting times, must not exceed two and a half hours. If the student is 13 years or older at the start of the school year or receives special education as referred to in § 17 paragraph 2, the school commute may take up to three hours.

Questions regarding school transportation are answered by the preschool director, the principal of your school, or the education economist.

The transport distance limit for students in grades 0-3 is 3 km.
The transport distance limit for students in grades 4-9 is 5 km.

Transport vehicles: A bus should always be used when a bus route is available. Effective from 1.1.2007.
School route: The school route is considered the distance from home to school (the shortest usable walking path), but the student must reach the road where the transport route runs independently.

Maximum distance to the route for preschool students: 0 km.
Maximum distance to the route for students in grades 1-3: 1 km.
Maximum distance to the route for students in grades 4-9: 3 km.
If the distance to the route exceeds the maximum distance, the student will be picked up.

School transportation is granted only to the address where the student is registered according to the population register and to the nearby school designated based on the home address. According to the decision made by UTB on 29.11.2017, § 81, school transportation is also granted to the nearby school in the other national language.

Students eligible for school transport may be picked up from a safer location than usual if the presence of predators has been confirmed.
Students who are not eligible for school transport are under the responsibility of their guardians, but morning and afternoon activities can be offered at the normal rate for those who wish.

The Director of Education grants transportation for dangerous school routes according to the Koululiitu program. If you believe you are entitled to school transportation due to a hazardous school route, you should apply for school transportation according to the instructions above.

School transportation can be arranged, if desired, between the school and the morning and afternoon activities, if the activities are organized at the nearby school in the other national language.

The right to school transportation requires that the transportation criteria are met.

Free transportation can be arranged if you have chosen preschool in one of the national languages and wish to have transport to supplementary early childhood education at another daycare center closest to your home address in the other national language.
