EU legislation on the control of primary production of meat (e.g., cattle and sheep) is based mainly on Regulation (EU) 2017/625 of the European Parliament and of the Council, as well as the hygiene regulations Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 and Regulation (EC) No 853/2004.

Within the West Coast Environmental Unit, control of primary production at production sites for beef and lamb began in autumn 2025. In 2026, the control will continue through inspections at a risk‑based selection of farms.

This year, the focus is on sheep and cattle. The objective is to inspect approximately 3–5% of farms per year. Farms not covered by health control programmes are prioritised in the risk assessment.
