In Finland, the people elect the parliament, the president of the republic, municipal councils, wellbeing services county councils, and 13 members of the European Parliament through general elections.
In municipal elections, members are elected to the municipal councils.
The next municipal elections will be held on April 13, 2025.
In the wellbeing services county elections, members of the wellbeing services county councils are elected for the counties responsible for organizing social and healthcare services, as well as rescue services, starting from January 1, 2023. The wellbeing services counties have self-government, and the highest decision-making authority is exercised by the county council. Provisions regarding the counties are stipulated in the Act on Wellbeing Services Counties (611/2021). The wellbeing services county elections are held at the same time as municipal elections.
The next wellbeing services county elections will be held on April 13, 2025.
According to Section 54 of Finland's Constitution, the President of the Republic is elected by direct vote for a term of six years. The President must be a native-born Finnish citizen. One individual can be elected President for a maximum of two consecutive terms.
The President is chosen through a direct popular vote, which, if necessary, is conducted in two rounds. The election takes place on the fourth Sunday in January every six years. If a candidate receives more than half of the votes cast (i.e., valid votes) in the first round, they are elected President. If no candidate receives more than half of the votes, a second election is held between the two candidates who received the most votes, on the second Sunday after the first election. The candidate who receives the most votes in the second election is elected President.
If only one candidate has been nominated, they are appointed President without an election. The new President assumes office on the first day of the month following the election.
The next presidential election will be held on January 27, 2030.
According to the Constitution of Finland, the sovereign power in Finland belongs to the people, who are represented by a parliament convened for that purpose. Finland has a unicameral parliament consisting of 200 members of parliament.
Members of parliament are elected in parliamentary elections, which are held every four years. All Finnish citizens who have turned 18 by election day are eligible to vote in the parliamentary elections.
The next parliamentary election will be held on April 18, 2027.
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union. EU citizens elect Members of the European Parliament through direct elections held in all member states every five years. Each member state conducts the election according to its national laws.
The next EU election will be held on June 10, 2029.
